As part of my (Alan Brenner) tasks while an intern with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Geographic Information Systems Program and as my master's thesis with the Pennsylvania State University's Department of Geography, I wrote a guide for cartography using ESRI's ARC/INFO suite. The guide consists of a chapter on data, a chapter on design, 8 chapters on point, line and area symbolization, a brief closing chapter. I wrote the guide in pre-HTML times, and at some point decided I should make a web site out of it. I've finally gotten that task largely done. I would expect issues with some hyperlinks--both bad links and lack of a link where there should be, but I'll be working on those as time permits. The AML and C code that I wrote to do various display tasks are documented in the 8 chapters on symbolization. I no longer have access to ARC/INFO, so I cannot maintain that code. I will gladly accept updates.
Cartographic Symbolization and Desgin: ARC/INFO Methods is available by following the links below, or at the SourceForge download page. The AML and C code is also available at the SourceForge download page.
The ARC Macro Language™ and C programs discussed in this guideline are available by anonymous ftp from sdcdg01.sdc.epa.gov and are in the files:
For users not on the Internet, the programs can be obtained on hardcopy, 3.5 inch disks, QIC 150 or 8mm tape by contacting the National GIS Program at 703-235-5600, or:
